I am a single camera photographer, and I have been using 28-35-50mm lenses exclusively. This said, I am seriously thinking about getting a 4x5 because of the movements and the ability correct perspective. It is a look that I wish I could achieve.

Congratulations on your son’s wedding!

Good evening Andrew,

First and foremost congratulations on your son’s wedding and your surviving the celebration. I certainly could not have thought of a substack post the day after my own son’s wedding!

I found your article informative and triggering my thoughts. In fact I had long been under the sell of the “better” equipment. However at that time, while fascinated by photography I did not really have a project mind. (Exception were family pictures where BW silver processes were required.)

The rest was just happening. Which means cameras / lenses etc were not necessarily making sense.

Focused now on certain projects I have specific combos that work extremely well, for that specific usage.

Do I still think of 8x10? Yes I do. However it is now within a specific project in mind, contact printing (platinum ideally). In this 5x7 and 8x10 could be equally appealing, Doing a test run to check.

The thought though is constrained by the exact specifications I need for that portrait project. So less of idle thought and musing, which may be sad in a way.

All this to say that the managing with our equipment (or not) may simply be linked to our uncertainty / lack of clarity around what we want to do with our photography.

Thank you for your extensive reply Patrick, have you considered a Sinar system? You can add different sized backs at any time. 5x4, 5×7, or 10×8.

Congratulations on the nuptials! Great article too, in light of the film explosion. My compass keeps pointing me to 35mm, 28mm FOV but sometimes I rebel :).

Much of my photography is confined to home and the immediate area. I found your book a great source of inspiration. Highly recommended.
