I don’t think I have ever read a better “how to” for film developing. It’s so clear and grounded. I think every beginner should read this. Congratulations on a really great article.

Hello Andrew,

how do you develop 120mm film?

I mean, do you spool one or two 120mm films on ONE reel?

Or do you put two reels with one 120mm film each one upon the other in a tank.

I ask this because I sometimes get uneven development at one border on the down sitting reel when I put two reels with 120mm film one upon the other.

I never have this problem with 35mm films.

Hi Thomas, I join two 120 films together in the dark (it is quite tricky and takes planning and practice), but most people use two reels for two films. The quantity of solution has to be enough to cover both spirals and I always add 50mil more to make sure.

An interesting article about home processing.

I too use the latest Paterson film tanks although I tend to use the twiddling stick rather than inversion.

I agitate continuously for the first minute and then for ten seconds at the start of each of the remaining minutes. So far no problems. It also prevents the dreaded leaky lid syndrome and I don't get told off by my wife for making a mess.
